The entire concept for the shoot originally came from the location. Truby King House and Garden was mentioned by a Willis York client. The mausoleum has symbolic and spiritual value as the final resting place of Truby and Isabella King who were known for their woman’s refuge facilities. The abandoned buildings and high archways inspired the overall look.

We Love: @otsumagic

For clothing we wanted something free flowing and dreamy that would compliment our outdoor location. Otsu garments are all made in New Zealand, using natural fibers such as linen and cotton. The owner, Yuka’s “awaken your consciousness” collection was perfect for this look.

Model: @stephpmcgrath @uniquemodelmanagement

Steph is a client of Willis York, signed to Unique Model Management, with her amazing bone structure and gentle nature she was a great choice. Not only did she do her research on the mood we wanted to capture, she really embodied the character on the day.

Photography: @simonlwong

Simon Wong was a huge help throughout our entire shoot. After very dramatically trying to explain our odd concept, he was able to translate the airy mood we were trying to achieve into beautiful images. Simon’s structured way of working really brought our concept together. We had so many ideas and Simon knew exactly how to capture them throughout this shoot.

Hair

@spencer_jade and @travelandhairbyrebeccabutton

Working together was a lot of fun. The idea and direction came together very quickly once we got going. Otsu and Truby King Garden was the inspiration of our “for the love of.” We listened to each other and came up with a hair look that worked with the aesthetic of the shoot.

@owaynewzealand

Oway is a new organic range that Willis York is now stocking. With their entirely sustainable / recyclable packaging and biodynamic ingredients, this was a brand we had to use for our “for the love of” shoot.

This is a product that we can truly support and back. It’s looking after our world.

Huge thank you to Willis York and everybody involved for making the shoot perfect. :)

Make Up - Kate Boyd, a long-time friend of Willis York was the perfect choice for a MUA thanks to her eye for detail.  She took our brief and brought it to life better than we could’ve dreamed.

Photographer -  We wanted our images to shine and knew Bex McGill’s energetic and free spirited attitude would help us get the perfect shots.

Models - We used Willis York’s go-to model agency, Kirsty Bunny Management and she helped us once again to find the perfect models.  Harriet and Charlotte were a pleasure to work with.

Concept
While brainstorming ideas we found that we were both drawn to Cher’s iconic sequin looks at Studio 54, so this became our inspiration! Our concept was an over the top glitter vibe throughout the styling and make up. We wanted to do a modern twist on the golden days of Disco Night Clubs.  Minimal glitter was the perfect product for us to work with; this biodegradable, highly reflective glitter was ideal for our desired look and so fun to play with!

How we worked together.

We were paired together as we are both creative in similar ways but Henare has a lot of editorial experience which balances out the little experience Ellie has.  We had a few hiccups along the way and this experience taught us a lot about time management and working under pressure.  Our strengths worked well together and we were stoked with our final images.  We came up with the concept together and made sure our ideas were cohesive then we did one model each.

_DSC3447.jpg

Plan

Henare:  For my model I really wanted massive blonde hair but she naturally had beautiful medium length hair.  I decided to wig wrap her hair then used around 30 old extensions and clipped them on row by row then disguised them with a clip on fringe.  I waved the hair to bring it all together for a current version of late 70’s big hair.

Ellie:  I wanted to have a nod to the big texture of the late 70s/early 80s, with wild texture in the fringe and an dramatic side part, I added a modern contrast with smooth ends, charlotte’s pre-existing blonde streak added an extra pop of the modern feels.

24

BY BEX BRENT and OLIVIA COTTIS

PHOTOGRAPHY - JADE WEAVER STYLIST - HANNAH JENSEN MUA - AMANDA KISONA

24 was inspired by the character 11 from stranger things. 24 lives in her own world; a survivor; a beautiful stranger you are yet to meet . One whom observes the world with pure eyes . It was also the 24th day of the month so we named her after this.

gravel 3_96.jpg

We wanted to showcase a Wellington stylist called Hannah Jensen or “style shrimp” and introduce the photography of Wellington based mega talent Jade Weaver.

gravel 2_96.jpg
gravel 1_96.jpg

Hannah has the most incredible collection of vintage clothing and also works on Saturdays at Wellingtons Caughley where she sourced some additional pieces. I asked her what direction she took with the styling, she said,

“Inspired by the naughty 90’s, the styling reflects the edge of the era clashed with feminine textures and patterns. Tying into natures exterior, colour tones complimented the environment while letting bold, jarring strokes of neon stand out. Leather, tulle, thick chunky footwear and structured silhouette combinations gave our model the true badass aesthetic.”

gucci sanke_96.jpg

Jade Weaver is a maverick of the arts and long time collaborator of Willis York, who is a photography major. She mentioned wanting to get back into editorial fashion photography so naturally I jumped at the chance let her capture 24. I trust her vision and the results are incredibly beautiful.

Amanda Kisona is a talented make up artist who can be found tutoring the next generation of artists at Te Auaha. We used the color palette the stylist had chosen for 24 to wear as our starting point for the make up. I wanted a bold strong warrior like vibe for the make up. I asked Amanda her thoughts about this shoot;

“ After collaborating with the team, the overall feel for the shoot got was a strong, empowered woman with a warrior vibe. The focus is on the strong eye inspired by the current Pantone living coral colour paired with minimal skin. Its makes the look punk, its rebellious”

Rune is a young woman who I have worked with since she was 14 and I created this shoot with her face in mind. Before the shoot, I always give a model the full brief , i.e the photographers moodboard, the stylists vision , hair and makeup looks and most importantly the muse she is to portray. Rune is a dream to work with and I cant wait to see where the future takes her. She is with Kirsty Bunny management .

BEHIND THE SCENES …

We purposely left Rune with re-growth colour in her hair to give a wonderful multi dimension colour and raw feel to the finished look. Using L’Oreal Professionnel TechniART liss control we created a smooth foundation to begin working from. We then sectioned her hair into 8 vertical sections and systematically worked in squares tying off the hair to mimic cornrows or chain mail. The knots were left visible to give a home made armor look. Because it was a classic Wellington windy day and we were shooting out on locations , we applied TechniART fix max in between the rows to seal the hair and finshed with a dusting of TechniART ring light.

The reality of a great photo shoot is how much effort everyone involved contributes. From applying make up, art directing examples of poses , lugging clothing and camera equipment up hills, holding bounces, driving to locations, cuts and bruises and braving the elements - no photo shoot is the same, but this is why we love what we do. We had such a creative hilarious fun day and I hope this inspires you to get out there and CREATE.

FOR THE LOVE OF

What does this mean to us?

For us it means doing something for pleasure as opposed to doing something for profit or gain or because you feel obliged. This project is a pure motivation to create something special and a chance to find new talent in Wellington that are passionate about what they do. It’s a chance to work together to create something that looks amazing while showcasing a local designer or artist. It’s so important to  continuously search for other creatives and work with people outside of your usual circle to keep your mind open and fresh with new approaches and ideas, and to meet some great people!

Who we love

Lucilla Gray is an extraordinary local designer with a collection of the most beautiful earrings. She’s making waves in the Wellington fashion world with her unique and innovative designs. Jade and I knew we wanted to showcase Lucilla’s jewellery with with a luscious retro vibe to the whole look with a modern approach. We decided on a luxurious gold eye and luminous skin. For the lips we decided that because the earrings are available in the same silhouettes with multiple colour options we would have a pop of complimenting colour to the lips that we switched up with each earring change throughout the shoot.

How we work together

Jade and I were paired up for our differences as well as our similarities. We both have a love of editorial work and seeing an image come to life is such an elating experience for us so working on this project together was fun. Even though we share the same love in the result we both have a very different approach to getting there which was something that challenged us and taught us ways to utilise both of our strengths and support each others weaknesses.

Our Team

Taine Rasmussen

Taine is a brand new photographer in Wellington. He worked with our other Willis York duo Rebecca and Connor on their shoot “Heavy Dew” and we were so in love with his images and felt we must showcase his work again! He has such a unique vision and because he is still rising in the industry he had such a fearless approach to trying different angles and poses and lighting. We couldn’t be happier with the result and with working with him, he’s such a pleasure to be around!

Laura Tucker MUA

Finding the right person to do the makeup was super important to Jade as she is also a make up artist. Luckily Jade was working backstage at WOW during the weeks before the shoot so was meeting plenty of fellow artists! We wanted to make sure we had someone new to the game with a fresh eye but also with confidence and vision. Laura was the perfect choice. She fully embraced our mood board and gave the girls the look we loved effortlessly and with great care to make sure we were on the same page.

Tahlia Pratt and Ella Arnst

We couldn’t have done this without our beautiful models! Kirsty Bunny Management is such an incredible friend to Willis York and we always look for our models here first. Tahlia is a Fresh Face at KBM and as soon as we saw her we knew, we had to have her! She was so great and easy to work with, she is truly stunning and we’d love to work with her again! Ella is one of Emily’s clients at the salon. When Emily met Ella she couldn’t help badgering Ella to model and she did! This was only Ella’s second ever shoot and we love her willingness and ability to be so relaxed in a totally unfamiliar environment while also looking so gorgeous.

@okewarainwear After seeing Okewa appear on TVNZ’s Breakfast talking about their latest collection of coats made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, we were very interested in working with them for our shoot and helping to spread the message surrounding recycling and the reduction of plastic waste.  We contacted them and they were very happy to provide us with their beautiful garments for our shoot.  Working with them was a pleasure.

@kirstybunnymanagement @freya.priest In terms of a model, we were wanting somebody that shared the values of protecting the environment and could relate to the message Okewa are displaying through their collection.  Kirsty Bunny Management is a friend of Willis York and we have worked with Freya in the past and knew she would fit this shoot perfectly.

@darchull In terms of make-up, we were wanting a simple but striking look but were unsure exactly how to achieve this.  With Daria’s help, we were able to create a sharp look that suited the garments and completed our look.  Without her help we would not have been able to capture the intensity in the images that we desired.

@tainerasmussen Taine helped us immensely through the process of our shoot.  After showing him our mood board, he was able to capture the feeling we wanted from the shoot and really made the images he shot come to life.  He has a great eye for fantastic images and could spot great places to capture and how to capture them in a very breath-taking way. Shooting with him was very easy and laid back, making the whole shoot run very smoothly.

IMG_7066.jpg

Plan

When searching for inspiration for this shoot, we wanted to create something different and find a team that inspired and expressed a message.  Okewa fit this perfectly with their new range of recycled rainwear, and from there, choosing Freya as our model was an obvious choice.  We chose the Botanical Gardens as our shoot location as we wanted somewhere natural and beautiful to keep in line with the themes of our shoot.  In regards to the hair, we initially wanted to have quite a wet, edgy look.  Even through to shoot day we had this in mind.  We had planned to shoot a few shots at the salon with dry hair and then move on to the botanical gardens and restyle it into the wet look, but once we arrived there, the dry sharp look fit the scene so well that we decided to run with it.

FOR THE LOVE OF

This shoot flowed so fluidly thanks to the perfect team that worked towards it.  Everyone’s ideas and skills melded precisely in a relaxed form.  Working outside in the elements really brought this shoots alive with the stunning sounds and sights of nature, it made us realise that we do what we do for the love of executing beautiful work. We couldn’t be more grateful for what Okewa has created and hope it inspires others to follow suit.  One step in the right direction for the future.

Thank you to everybody who has helped us create these beautiful images and to Bex Brent for pushing us to work as a team and to endorse our own brands and community.  Thanks to Wellington for being a cool capital!!  Visit our Instagrams for more images.

@open.studios We were blessed to secure OpenStudios thanks to Jessie Wong. OpenStudios is such a beautiful and inspiring space that was perfect for our needs and really helped our idea become a reality.

@worldbrandinnz We wanted to pursue World to be a part of this shoot due to their garments giving us huge inspiration. After getting in contact with their team, they were just as excited to help us out and provided us with the beautiful pieces. They added luxury to the looks and elevated the photos to the next level.

@kirstybunnymanagement @max.mcm Kirsty Bunny Management is a long-time friend of Willis York. Finding a model with her management was a easy task. As soon as Daniel and I found a photo of Max McMeiken we knew he would fit perfectly for our shoot. He was a pleasure to work with.

@amanda.makeupartistry We wanted Max to look masculine but didn’t want to restrict the artist too much. Amanda Kisona, (make up tutor at Te Auaha) was able to take our undeveloped ideas and create a striking, complimentary look.

@marlborough_lights We cannot speak highly enough of David James who stepped in with less than a week’s notice after other plans fell through. We really felt David transformed this shoot from individual pieces to a believable story. Watching David work is a lot of fun and he has a very effective way of getting the most out of his models.

The Plan

Myself and Daniel teamed up and started to search for inspiration. We originally were set on the idea of dark, edgy, wet hair with a slightly intimidating feel. After exploring inspiration, seeing more of World’s collection, teaming up with make-up artist Amanda Kisona, photographer David James and seeing their ideas, we started to see our shoot in another light and move in a different direction. We were inspired by World’s collection and really started to explore 70’s vibes, with bigger hair and a fluffier texture. We knew this would move us in a `fun’ direction however it was important for us to maintain the edge and commanding feel we initially planned for.

FOR THE LOVE OF

This ended up being the dream team! This shoot had such a relaxing atmosphere because everybody was legitimately creating purely for the love of it. The same way our ideas developed over the planning stage, the mood of the images developed throughout the day. This was hugely influenced by the music playing while we shot. Greta Van Fleet, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix led the way and the team responded by producing these amazing images.

A massive thank you again to the whole team and to Willis York for pushing us to create just to create. To see more of these images you can find them on our Instagram pages.
